Guidelines for the 2nd International Music Olympiad Riga 2014

The 2nd International Music Olympiad Riga for students of general comprehensive secondary schools will be organised by the Latvian Music Teachers Association (LVIIMSA) and the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music (JVLMA) in cooperation with the Latvian Ministry of Education and Research. 

Guidelines for the 2nd International Music Olympiad Riga 2014
In recognition of the growing significance of music in the field of culture and in the general education of young people, and with the aim of enhancing the development of international contacts in the field of school education in music, an international music Olympiad will be organised for lower and upper secondary school students. The Olympiad will be called 2nd International Music Olympiad Riga 2014 and is a competition between individuals.

The aims of the Olympiad: 
  • To strengthen the position of music education as a creative subject in national curricula; 
  • To create motivation and offer musically talented young people opportunities for artistic self-expression at international level; 
  • To widen opportunities for composing music (participants can use vocal and acoustic musical instruments as well as various electro-acoustical instruments and audio-visual multimedia. 
  • To develop musical literacy as a prerequisite for creative activities; 

The 2nd International Music Olympiad Riga 2014 will take place from April 30 to May 3, 2014 for participants of two age groups: 
Group I - aged 12-14 
Group II - aged 15-18 

The contestants shall be students of general lower and upper secondary schools or music schools 
(They can study at the same time in music school).

Application

The deadline for registration of participants in the 2nd International Music Olympiad Riga 2014 is April 4, 2014 

2 competitors from each country can take part in both age groups. 

The total number of contestants is limited to 33 participants in each age group.

Participation fee: 50 EUR.

All participants will be provided with free accommodation (3 nights) and meals. The participants must cover the travelling costs. 

Each country can send up to 2 accompanying persons. One accompanying person will be provided with free accommodation (3 nights) and meals. The sending country covers the costs of the second accompanying person. Accompanying persons do not have to pay the participation fee. 

The 2nd International Music Olympiad Riga 2014 will take place in Riga, at the Jāzeps Vītols Music Academy of Latvia (1 Kr.Barona Str.; Riga, Latvia). 

The language used at the Olympiad will be English. Written tasks (assignments) for both groups will be provided in the native language of the contestant.

The results of the Olympiad will be assessed by an international jury of 5 members in each age group. The results will be presented in the form of protocols. 

Content of the Olympiad 
The Olympiad will consist of three parts for participants of two age groups: 

At registration (on April 30 in Riga) each participant must add: 
A short description of the song in written form 
A score and a short description of the original composition in written form. 

Awards

All participants will be awarded with diplomas in gold, silver or bronze according to the number of points scored. Special prizes will be awarded to the best performers of a song (of both age groups), to the best composers of original compositions and to the best contestant with the highest score in the listening tasks. 

The jury is entitled to award additional prizes in the case of extraordinary achievement in some field of the Olympiad.
